Itinerary

Start your day at the Sólheimajökull parking lot. Here, you will meet your guide and the rest of the memebers. The group size is limited to 14 people, so you will have a more personal experience. Your guide will give a short introduction and go over important safety information. This is also the time to ensure you have all the necessary hiking gear, like good quality rain gear and comfortable, non-cotton clothing.

After the briefing, it is time to hop into the specially modified glacier truck. This truck is designed to handle the icy terrain and will take you up the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The ride itself is quite an adventure as the truck navigates the rough, icy landscape. You will get your first glimpse of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano on clear days.

Once the truck reaches a good starting point, you will begin your hike. The hike is around 9 km (5.6 miles) and will take about six hours. The route is moderately challenging, so it is perfect for those in good physical shape and with some mountain climbing experience. You will walk above and along the Sólheimajökull outlet glacier as you hike. Look out for the different shapes and colors of the glacial ice. One of the highlights of the hike is the stunning panoramic views. You will see Eyjafjallajökull, Sólheimajökull, and other unique landscapes of the south coast.

Your guide will share interesting information about Iceland’s geological wonders and how glaciers have shaped the land over thousands of years. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Iceland's natural history. To help preserve the area's natural beauty, staying on the designated path and following your guide’s instructions is important. As you near the end of the hike, you’ll make your way back to the starting point. The hike is generally downhill, which makes it a bit easier towards the end. Keep an eye on the weather; it can be different at higher altitudes than the parking lot.

Once the hike is complete, the glacier truck will take you back to the Sólheimajökull parking lot. This marks the end of your adventure. After a full day of exploring and hiking, it is time to head home. You will leave with unforgettable memories of Iceland’s stunning glaciers and landscapes. Make sure to rest and recover after your adventure.
