Itinerary
During the 15th century, the Borghese family rose in stature and power. The wealthy family built Villa Borghese as their private residence in Rome. Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a passionate art collector who wanted a place to display and preserve the family's fine art collection, suggested creating an art gallery inside the villa. Today, you can visit the gallery to appreciate one of the greatest collections of baroque sculptures on Earth. It will also be a rare opportunity in Rome to see world-class artwork by Bernini, Caravaggio, Titian, and Raphael with far fewer other people compared to the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum, for example.
Join the tour where an expert will explain the history and significance of the artworks. This tour allows a deeper understanding of masterpieces by Bernini, Caravaggio, Canova, and Raphael. The tour also includes insights into the history of the Villa Borghese. Skip the long queues and dive straight into the art collection. Wander through the galleries, taking your time to admire each piece, from Bernini's dynamic sculptures to Caravaggio's dramatic paintings.
Meet your guide at the gallery and enjoy an informative tour. After the guided portion, you can continue exploring the museum on your own, ensuring you do not miss any details of the magnificent art. You can also check out the entrance-only ticket to the Borghese Gallery. This option allows you to explore the gallery and its treasures at your own pace. Discover the captivating art collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese and marvel at the neoclassical beauty of Pauline Bonaparte by Canova.
The gallery's best sculptures and paintings come from Cardinal Scipione Borghese's collection. He loved all kinds of art and helped create many sculptures inspired by classical art. One famous piece is the sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte Borghese by Canova, made between 1805 and 1808. It has been in the gallery since 1838. Pauline is lying on a chair with her right hand and holding an apple on her left. The detailed sculpture is a Neoclassical masterpiece. The gallery also has amazing works by Bernini, like Apollo and Daphne, and paintings by artists like Caravaggio, Titian, Correggio, and Raphael. In 1807, Camillo Borghese sold many statues and art pieces to Napoleon, now in the Louvre Museum.
After visiting the gallery, stroll through the beautiful Villa Borghese gardens. This lush green space is perfect for a relaxing walk. Do not miss the Pincio Terrace, which offers stunning views of Rome’s historic landscape, providing a perfect end to your art-filled day.
