Situated in Salford, RHS Garden Bridgewater occupies the grounds of the former Worsley New Hall estate. Edward Blore, the architect, created this opulent Gothic-style residence between 1840 and 1845 for Francis Egerton, the 1st Earl of Ellesmere.
It had a tennis court and a croquet lawn, just like many elegant gardens of the time. The formal gardens, the 11-acre walled kitchen gardens, and the gardener's cottage (now Garden Cottage) were all divided by a wooded tract to the west of the hall. During Christmas and Easter, workers from these kitchen gardens delivered "flowers and evergreens" to nearby churches, Sunday schools, and workhouses.
Since planning clearance was granted in 2017, the 154-acre garden is the largest practical horticultural project in Europe. At the closest RHS Garden to a major conurbation, some 7.8 million people who live within an hour's travel time of the garden can now enjoy world-class horticultural inspiration and expertise.
The garden, which gets its name from the Bridgewater Canal that runs beside it, is now a fantastic resource for both local communities and horticultural aficionados. Its unique position attracts both urban tourists and aquatic wildlife, and in its short time as an RHS garden, it has already had a significant influence.
