The tour starts in Lisbon and takes us to the town of Alcobaça, which is home to the Monastery of Alcobaça, also called the Royal Monastery of Santa Mariade Alcobaça. In 1989, UNESCO designated the monastery as a World Heritage Site.
You can explore the fascinating historical fabric of the alluring town of Obidos there. You'll see famous sites including the Town Gate, which honors Bidos' patron saint, Our Lady of Sorrow. With its medieval origins and exquisitely preserved original gateway, St. Peter's Church illustrates the town's development over time. The construction of the Monastery began in 1178, by order of King D. Afonso Henriques, and the monks occupies it in 1223. It is one of the largest and best-preerved complexes of the Cistercian Order. King D. Pedro chose the church of the monastery as the burial site for himself and his beloved, Inês de Castro, whose impressive tombs can be visited.

Being the first pousada in Portugal to be situated inside a historic structure, bidos' pousada is a historical jewel. It was formerly the Paço do Alcaide and today offers a distinctive environment for your exploration.
You will also tour the St. James Church, which King Sancho built in 1186 and frequented by the royal family while they were visitors to Bidos. St. Mary's Church of Óbidos is steeped in legend, with claims that it stands on the same spot as an ancient Visigoth temple turned mosque before becoming a Catholic church in 1148 during the Christian conquest led by Alphonse I.
